Jeep's Two Off-Road Giants

At Campbell McLennan, we're incredibly excited about the newest models of Jeep's titans of off-roading: the 2021 Jeep Wrangler and the 2021 Jeep Gladiator. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the latest version of a venerable design that became famous in World War II for its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator features a cargo bed and a much greater towing capacity. Both models are distinguished by their removable roofs and doors and by their remarkable off-road capabilities.

When to use 2H, 4H, and 2L Modes

The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator come with three possible driving modes: 2H (two-wheel-drive high range), 4H (four-wheel-drive high range), and 4L (four-wheel-drive low range). To switch between them, you use the short lever to the left or your regular gear shifter. Each mode has a different purpose and different strengths.

2H is your standard driving mode that powers the rear axle only. This mode is the most fuel-efficient and helps with engine longevity. This mode should be used only on dry, paved roads.

4H engages your four-wheel drive and delivers power to both axles. This mode allows you to travel at full speed while also granting improved traction. Use this mode for driving over difficult surfaces such as unpaved roads, wet roads, sand, ice, and snow.

4L engages your four-wheel-drive in low range using a lower gear ratio. This mode grants you higher torque for maximum traction but slower speed. Use this mode when driving over rocky surfaces, steep inclines or declines, and deep mud or snow.

Tips, Tricks, Dos, & Don'ts

  • DO use 2H for regular highway driving.
  • DO shift into 4H for highway driving on slick or slippery roads up to 88 kph.
  • DON'T exceed speeds of 40 kph while in 4L mode.
  • DON'T attempt to shift directly from 2H to 4L (or vice versa). Always shift to 4H first.
  • DON'T attempt to shift to 4L mode while driving at speed. Slow your vehicle to 5 kph and then shift into neutral before shifting to 4L.
  • DO consult your owner's manual if there's anything you're uncertain about to avoid damage.
